People buy what people can afford
If someone steals from me I expect them to pay
And my neighbor stole day after day
He’s not a millionaire but he’s got a few
Yet he went and stole so I had to sue

He’d throw crumbs to the birds and offer strangers soup
But more importantly he wouldn’t spend a cent
In my store yet he enjoyed the scent
The sweet smells would travel all through the air
Straight from my ovens right on over there
He’d breathe it all in he’d smile having fun
Made his old stale bread taste like a cinnamon bun
And for such pleasure provided by me
Surely he should have to pay a little smelling fee...

And it sure seemed like the judge agreed
He had him take three coins out I thought to give to me
But instead he told the man
To pass the coins from hand to hand
Then the judge asked me if I had heard the coins
And if the sound of the money had brought me joy
Of course it did now, send the coins my way
He said “no but it’s settled, see you’ve just been paid”
A smell was stolen, but it’s all fine now
